Whistle Stop Cafe
While there are the amazing parks, hikes, and camping, that make Western Massachusetts what it is, the Whistle Stop Cafe is a lack luster experience. It does fit in with the retro 1950’s feel of the town but once inside Whistle Stop is dimly lit and pretty much empty besides myself and the barista (who was very nice). The coffee is pretty average but does have a nice after taste (they use a custom blend from Dean’s Beans out of Orange Massachusetts). With a slightly dim atmosphere this café feels almost like it’s lost the battle against time. The good news is there is plenty of seating, which is fairly comfortable, and free WiFi to go along.
Points of interest in town include Element Brewing Company and the North Village Smokehouse. Millers River runs through the old mill town and Montague Plains Wildlife Area is only about a mile west of town. Barton Cove Campground is also just a couple of miles north of town on the Connecticut River, this clean and quiet spot has great views where you can also kayak or canoe to further explore the area.
Overall, I rate Whistle Stop Cafe a 3.6 out of 5
